Decorating with Candles Glass hurricanes of all shapes, sizes and styles are “in.” Whether they’re sleekly unadorned or handsomely curved and footed, there’s nothing quite as dramatic as a stately pillar candle softly burning in a glass hurricane. The marriage of foliage and candles is another sure-to-please decorative flourish.
Baskets, glass bowls, even decorative cookie tins can make simple but wonderful bases for combining foliage and candles with a few silver or gold accents for sparkle. Just be sure that the candles are placed on stable, fire-resistant holders and elevated enough to be clear of anything that could catch fire, including the foliage.
Of course no celebration would be complete without candles for the dinner table. For casual family meals, simple candle arrangements work the best. For formal dinners, a low arrangement of fresh flowers anchored with tapers in crystal, brass or silver candlesticks is always elegant. For more drama, think glass and mirrors. Place an oblong mirrored candle tray in the center of the table, topped by a line of votives or tealights in faceted glass candle holders, and lightly interspersed with sprigs of leaves. Dim the lights and let the glow of candlelight reflect off the glass holders and mirror to create a soft but radiant shimmer.
The possibilities are endless. Just remember to keep your arrangement low enough so that people can make eye contact without having to peer around the centerpiece. And be sure to use unscented candles. Scented candles at the dinner table will compete with the aroma and enjoyment of the food you’re serving.
